Smile Makeover

A smile makeover typically involves restoration of the front eight to ten teeth in either the upper or lower jaw or a combination of both.

Many Harley Street Dental and Implant Clinic patients find that transforming their smile affects their personal and social lives for the better if they have been avoiding social situations and smiling out of a sense of shame about their appearance.

Smile makeover is a term used to describe a combination of treatments designed to produce an attractive smile which will be different for each patient but might include porcelain veneers to cover gaps between teeth, orthodontic work to align crowded, crooked or overlapping teeth and correct a ‘gummy smile’, crowns to alter the length, width and overall arrangement of the teeth, teeth whitening to lighten the shade of discoloured teeth and implants or bridges to replace missing teeth.

Before this kind of work is carried out the patient will be examined for signs of gum disease and if detected this will be treated first by a periodontist at Harley Street Dental and Implant Clinic. Healthy gums are a sound foundation for all dental work and lengthen the life span of veneers and bridges by protecting the teeth they are fixed to from root infections.

A smile makeover can be akin to a major renovation project depending on the amount of damage that has already occurred, yet the outcome is usually the same; patients feel and look healthier.

Ongoing appointments with a hygienist every quarter are recommended to protect teeth from the onset of gum disease and the build up of plaque and tartar, which accelerates with age, in order to make an investment in a smile makeover last as long as possible and avoid the need for further dental work.

Veneers should last for many years but they can chip or break like real teeth. The dentist will explain how long each veneer is expected to last, although small chips can be repaired.

Veneers are thin sheets of porcelain which are bonded to the outside of teeth to mask surface defects, discolouration and misalignments. They take at least two visits to the dentist; first the tooth is prepared by removing a small amount of the surface to create room for the porcelain shell, and the dental team takes an impression, which is given to a dental technician with the colour of the surrounding teeth which have been matched on a shade guide. Bonding a veneer in place on the final visit changes a tooth’s colour, shape, size or length.

Crowns are used for teeth which need to be strengthened either because they have broken, have been weakened by a very large filling or have had root canal treatment.
