“The face reflects the personality of someone and tells the story about their life a little bit, so if you have a jolly, happy personality and a very deep frown line it’s not complementing your personality. If you take away the frown line, but still allow them to express themselves with the face, it can help.”
Facial aesthetics can involve injections but should always begin with a detailed study of the patient’s face.
Harley Street Dental and Implant Clinic facial aesthetics specialist said: “The result I like to have is for my patient’s relatives and friends to see them and say they look fresher but without detecting the treatment.
“You have to really study the face to find which treatment is appropriate. Some lines are endearing although some lines are not complementary and they are the ones we try to soften or take away.
Our skilled professionals provide injections and dermal fillers with a view to accentuating the natural features of the face.
Toxins are injected into the face to numb the facial muscles, whilst dermal fillers plump up the skin with an injected solution which reduces lines, both with almost immediate results.
Muscles in the face work in opposition, some lifting and others pulling down, and with age the muscles that drag the face down gain dominance with the help of gravity, so by numbing some of these muscles with a toxin injection, it is possible to lift the face and make it look younger, softer and fresher with minimum intervention.
These toxin injections temporarily relaxes facial muscles to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as prevent new lines from forming. Common injection sites include the forehead, the area between the eyebrows, the corners of the eyes, between the nose and mouth and the crease that runs from the corners of the mouth to down the side of the chin.
It takes up to two weeks to see the full result, although some results are evident within four to eight hours. After two weeks the specialist will review progress and apply further touch-ups where required.
The treatment can last between three and six months and most patients attend further treatment three or four times in the first year and twice a year thereafter.
The toxin used, has been used for non-aesthetic medical purposes such as the suppression of overactive sweating for decades. It is injected with small needles and used locally in small volumes so there is no risk of systemic side effects, although pregnant and breastfeeding women are not advised to undergo the procedure.
Side effects may include pain at the injection site, infection, inflammation, swelling, redness, bleeding and bruising. Some of these symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction and although these symptoms may occur, the toxin is not permanent.
Dermal fillers act to flatten wrinkles by filling out the tissue beneath the skin to improve the skin’s tautness and as the product is injected the expansion of the neurofibres can cause momentary pain, followed by redness or sometimes bruising or swelling at the site of the injection.
